I will expand on the role of the institutional context in Chapter 3. To summarise: the context we refer to, when we talk about literacy as a social practice, consists of people and their intentions (you want to see your mother and you hate taking the car), of actions and interactions, of rules and conventional behaviour, of cultural knowledge and of institutions. But how we read it, how we understand its meaning, how we react to it – these have to do with more than skills. In his study of local literacy practices in Bangladesh, Maddox (2001) draws our attention to the very context-specific nature of reading and writing on the marketplace of the Bangladeshi village he worked in. The writing that goes on in the market cannot be understood without also understanding the complex system of borrowing and repaying money that is essential to most market transactions.
